Ayurveda teaches us to pay attention to the season's energies and act in ways that balance these energies. If, like me, you live in the Northern Hemisphere, it's currently Spring. The main energies of Spring are cool, heavy, slow, wet, smooth, and soft (think mud).

How can we bring more balanced energy into our daily habits during the Spring season?
Eat lighter meals. In Winter, we tend to eat heavier meals. As we move into Spring we need to lighten up with salads and brothy soups. Make your salads with seasonal veggies like baby greens, peas, radishes, and asparagus.
Focus on replacing sweet flavors with pungent flavors like garlic, onion, ginger, and chilis.
Avoid cold drinks. Instead, try warm beverages such as herbal tea or warm water with lemon and ginger. Even room-temperature water is better than water with ice cubes.
Dry-brush your skin before showers. This removes dead skin, stimulates the lymphatic system, and improves circulation.
Do a gentle seasonal cleanse. Consider juicing as a breakfast replacement. Avoid alcohol and caffeine. Eat high-quality proteins with freshly prepared veggies (like a big salad!!)
Bonus Habit - If you suffer from seasonal allergies, they might be kicking in about now. Use a Neti pot every day to help flush out nasal congestion and rinse away allergens.
These habits aren't complicated and are just common sense. However, time and time again, we ignore what we know, and that often leads us out of balance. Embrace the season, and stay healthy, happy, and balanced with Ayurveda.
