5 Simple Ayurvedic Habits For Fall

Ayurveda teaches us to pay attention to the season's energies and act in ways that balance these energies. If, like me, you live in the Northern Hemisphere, it's almost Fall. The main energies of Autumn are cold, dry, light, rough, and unstable.

5 Simple Ayurvedic Habits

How can we bring more balanced energy into our daily habits during the Fall season?

  1. Eat warm, heavier meals. In the summer, we love a good salad for dinner, but as the weather gets colder and more chaotic, we should turn to cooked meals featuring seasonal squash and root vegetables.

  2. Counteract the dryness of the season by staying hydrated with warm fluids. Think herbal teas or warm water with lemon. Maybe consider taking a thermos of hot water to bed with you to drink as soon as you wake up in the morning.

  3. Routine, routine, routine. The best way to balance the instability of the season is by keeping to your routine. Set a bedtime and wake time and stick with them. Eat at the same time every day. Exercise at the same time. Etc.

  4. Try abhyanga. This is just a fancy ayurvedic term for massage with oil. Pick up some unscented sesame oil (not the one from the grocery store); you may even want to warm it in a butter warmer. Then use it to massage your body. You get all the benefits of massage (stress reduction, increased circulation, healthy lymph system), plus moisturization from the oil.

  5. Prioritize rest. I don't mean naps, but you can certainly enjoy a nap if you want. Prioritize nighttime sleep, make time for relaxing hobbies, meditate daily, or enjoy a warm bath. Calming, soothing, restful activities.

These habits aren't complicated, and they are kinda just common sense. However, time and time again, we ignore what we know, and that often leads us out of balance. Embrace the season, and stay healthy, happy, and balanced with Ayurveda.
