Making Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream

Updated: Nov 18

If you love pumpkin pie, you must give this recipe a try! It tastes just like pumpkin pie, but in ice cream form.

We don't eat a lot of sweets in our house, but when we do, I prefer them to be homemade. That way, I know what's in it; I get to control the ingredients and avoid all the fake coloring, preservatives, and random additives.

The Recipe

I found this recipe online but didn't like that it used canned pumpkin pie filling (which is sweetened and flavored). So I changed it just a bit to use canned pumpkin puree (pure pumpkin), increased the sugar slightly, and added my own pumpkin pie spice.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups milk

  • 1 1/2 cups half & half

  • 1 cup heavy cream

  • 1 cup canned pumpkin puree

  • 3/4 cup sugar

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

  • 1-2 tsp pumpkin pie spice

  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 6 graham crackers, broken into small pieces (I think gingersnap cookies would be a great substitution)

Directions

  1. Freeze the ice cream maker's bowl following the manufacturer's instructions (mine requires 24 hrs in the freezer).

  2. Combine everything except the graham crackers into a large bowl and mix well.

  3. Pour the mixture into the ice cream maker and process following the manufacturer's instructions.

  4. When you transfer the ice cream to a sealed, freezer-safe container, put half in, add graham cracker pieces, then add the rest.

  5. Freeze for a few hours and then serve it up!

The Ice Cream Maker

To make this, you do need an ice cream maker. You can find the one I have HERE. It was not this expensive when I got mine and it amazes me how such a simple machine can be so pricey. But if you want to make ice cream, you really do need one.

Serving Suggestions

Now that you have a container of Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream in your freezer, how will you serve it?

  • scoop it up and serve it with graham crackers.

  • make ice cream sandwiches using oatmeal cookies or ginger snaps.

  • use it to make this Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream Cake.

  • or just put in it a bowl and eat it. I can't say enough how yummy this ice cream is!!!
