There are many varieties of lavender, but Lavandula angustifolia, also known as English lavender, is typically used by herbalists. While lavender is native to the Mediterranean area, it is grown all over the world

The Benefits
Like chamomile, lavender is good for any issue requiring soothing, calming energy.
Lavender's calming properties make it excellent for decreasing anxiety and stress, treating mild insomnia, and relieving headaches (especially when caused by stress). In addition to its relaxing, soothing qualities, lavender has some antibacterial and antiviral qualities as well.
In addition to these wonderful benefits, the smell is amazing! Therefore, lavender is one of the most commonly used essential oils.

Words of Caution
Next to Chamomile, Lavender is one of the best herbs for beginner herbalists because it is relatively safe and has many common uses. However, if you have sensitive skin, be sure to dilute lavender essential oil in a carrier oil before using it on your skin.
Also, some people are allergic to lavender. Allergies can be severe. If you have never used lavender, use caution the first time.
