National Hobby Month

January is National Hobby Month, a time to encourage our creativity, personal growth and fun!

In the new year, we often look to try something new, to grow, to learn, to experiment, whether by taking up a brand-new hobby or dusting off old supplies and reengaging with an old one. If you are trying to improve yourself in the new year, or simply trying to stave off the winter boaredome, hobbies to the rescue.

Benefits

Did you know that beyond simply passing the time, hobbies offer several tangible benefits?

  • Hobbies provide an outlet to relieve stress and anxiety.

  • Depending on the hobby, some provide a level of physical exercise.

  • Many inspire creativity.

  • Even solitary hobbies can offer opportunities for social interaction, whether it's talking to others about a shared hobby, joining a group of hobby enthusiasts, or chatting with people at a supply store.

Outdoor Hobbies

If you want a hobby that gets you out and about, try one of these:

  • sports

  • hiking

  • fishing

  • gardening

  • bird watching

  • kayaking

  • geocaching

  • cycling

  • beach combing

  • camping

Indoor Hobbies

If hanging out inside is more your thing (or the weather deems it necessary), try something from this list:

  • reading

  • painting (watercolor, acrylic)

  • crocheting or knitting

  • sewing

  • cooking or baking

  • woodworking

  • furniture restoration

  • jewelry making

  • creative writing

  • learn to play an instrument

Starting a New Hobby

If you are looking to start a new hobby or pick up an old one, it can be a pricy endeavor. Most hobbies require some equipment or supplies. Always try to start small. There is nothing more annoying than paying out a ton of money only to find you don't actually use or enjoy it.

  • If possible, borrow supplies or equipment to try it out for a bit.

  • Purchase used supplies from a second-hand store or marketplace.

  • If you have to buy new supplies, buy the bare minimum to start.

  • Check out your local library. Some libraries have tools, fishing poles, cake pans, etc.

  • Before you buy How-To books, check out your local library and search YouTube for tutorials.

Whatever your interests, there is likely a hobby for you. Don't be afraid to experiment and try new things! Hobbies keep our lives fun and interesting. It's essential to find things that bring you joy and make your life fulfilling.
