My Favorite Self-Care Habits

Self-care isn't about spa days. Self-care habits are the intentional actions we take to maintain and improve the well-being of our bodies, minds, hearts, and souls. It's not about luxury, it's about wellness.

My Self-Care Habits

We are all individuals, so what supports my well-being may be different from what works for you. However, if you don't know where to start, feel free to try some of these.

Healthy Eating - I focus on limiting processed foods and making most of our meals from scratch. Our meals focus on vegetables, proteins, and healthy grains. Delicious and healthy foods grace my table every day!

Baths - while it may seem luxurious to spend time lounging in a warm bath, it can be just the thing to decrease stress and prepare my body and mind for a good night's sleep. If you don't have a bathtub, dim the lights in your bathroom and take a long evening shower.

Journaling - taking some time to write out my thoughts helps me process my thoughts and emotions. My newest journaling habit is to write out just a sentence or two every few days of my favorite thing that happened that day.

There are so many ways to journal: following writing prompts, keeping a daily gratitude journal, stream-of-consciousness, art journals, etc. Try one until you find a method that works for you!

Oil Massage - in Ayurveda, this is called abhyanga. Massaging the body with warm oil hydrates the skin and soothes the mind and body. It promotes overall well-being. I keep a butter warmer filled with oil in the bathroom so I can give myself an oil massage before or after my morning shower.

Yoga - if you know me, you had to see this one coming! Yoga can be a perfectly balanced exercise routine. Depending on the poses you choose, it can be aerobic (sun salutations), strengthening (warrior poses, chaturanga, plank), stretching (forward folds, butterfly pose, dragon), and balancing (tree, pointer dog).

Meditation - a meditation practice does not have to be long or complicated. In fact, most often my meditations are super short; just a minute or two, a couple of times a day. I occasionally enjoy a longer session, but that's not what my daily practice looks like.

Decluttering - if this doesn't sound like a self-care habit, you'd be wrong. I have been working to simplify and declutter my home for several years. Slowly and steadily, I have transformed my house into my home...into my sanctuary. When our homes are simplified, we have the space and the time to do the things we love.

Hobbies - finding time to do something you love is a great act of self-care. For me, it's reading, watercolor painting, cooking from scratch, and watching inspirational videos. Recently, I started learning crochet. It's addictive.

Other Self Care

There are many other methods of self-care. They might not be interesting enough to make an official list, but they are equally important.

  • hydration (get your 8+ glasses a day)

  • sleep (create a soothing nighttime routine, prioritize sleep)

  • time with loved ones (spending time with friends and family is social self-care)

  • spend time in nature
