In this post I share with you an easy recipe for making your own hummus. This basic recipe can be altered to make endless flavors, making it a versatile recipe which can me used in many applications.

As a dip for raw vegetables & pita
Layered on grilled eggplant steaks
As a mayonnaise substitute on sandwiches
Bagel topping
As a layer in a Mediterranean dip
In a grilled veggie panini
As a coating for baked chicken
Thinned with water and cream = pasta sauce
Watch Me Make It
Ingredients (for a basic version)
1 can of chick peas (garbanzo beans), drained
2 TBSP tahini
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 tsp salt
olive oil (you can also cut the oil with a little water or lemon juice for a creamier hummus)

food processor (they no longer make my model)
Preparation
Place minced garlic, drained chick peas, tahini and salt into a food processor. Begin to pulse processor, then allow to run while drizzling in olive oil/water/lemon juice. Once desired consistency is reached, transfer to a storage container and refrigerate.

Flavor Ideas
Lemon Pepper - Add the zest from 1 lemon and 1/2 tsp ground black pepper. Juice the lemon and add to the processor before olive oil
Lemon Parsley - Add the zest from 1 lemon and 1/4 cup chopped parsley. Juice the lemon and add to the processor before olive oil
Roasted Garlic - Roast 1 bulb of garlic. Squeeze into processor instead of minced garlic
Spicy Roasted Red Pepper - Add 1 roasted red pepper and 1 tsp garlic chili paste
Cilantro Jalapeño - Add a chopped jalapeño, 1/4 cup chopped cilantro and the juice of 1 lime
Tapenade - replace salt with 1/4 cup chopped kalamata olive
Everything Bagel - add 1 TBSP of everything bagel spice blend
Onion - slice and caramelize 1 small onion, blend into hummus before adding oil
Fresh Veggie - after making hummus, stir in finely chopped/grated raw veggies (onion, broccoli, carrot)
Vegetable - Blend in a cooked root vegetable (1 carrot, 1 beet OR 1 parsnip)
