Get Your Daily Dose of Movement

Join me for a 20-minute yoga flow! A little bit of yoga is a great way to start your day, end your day or to break up the monotony of the day. Fit it in whenever you want and enjoy the great yoga 'feels'.

Get Your Daily Dose of Movement

We should get 30 minutes of movement a day, at least 5 days a week. One of the easiest ways to do this is to combine a short daily yoga session with a small amount of 'other' exercise. I find that for me, and many others, it is best to incorporate more movement into our daily habits versus trying to schedule time at the gym.

I like to start every morning with some amount of yoga. Sometimes it is an active session of sun salutations and warrior series, other days there is more stretching, twisting, and meditation. I prefer yoga first thing in the morning, before the day gets away from me and I run out of time.

For 'other' exercise, keep it simple. Yes, it's great if you can get to the gym or spend some time on your treadmill. However, it is best to focus on adding movement throughout your entire day, not just that 1/2 hour at the gym.

  • Take more steps. Get out and walk. Park farther away. Use the bathroom farthest from you. Walk the grocery store vs ordering grocery delivery.

  • Never miss an opportunity to take the stairs. If you have stairs in your home or at work, find a reason to use them several times a day.

  • Keep a set of dumbbells handy to make it easy to do some simple arm exercises a couple of times a week. Or hold the dumbbells while you do a few squats.

  • While watching TV, move to the floor and do some crunches.

  • Garden (yard work is a lot of exercise).

  • Play (bike, participate in sports, push a child on a swing, swim, go kayaking, play catch).

  • Spend a couple of 1/2-hour chunks of time dusting, vacuuming, mopping, etc. (YES - housework counts as exercise!!)

The Flow

I hate starting a YouTube yoga video only to find halfway in that it was not the flow I was hoping for. Maybe I'm in the mood for a lot of floor poses and then I realize all we are doing is standing poses, or maybe the flow keeps repeating a pose that hurts my body. If you want a preview of what this 20-minute yoga flow looks like, here it is.
